Privacy
Your privacy
HeatGridLA has no accounts or sign-up. It has no advertising or analytics trackers, which follow how people use a site. Here is everything it does with information about you.
Your location
Your location is used only when you press “Use my location” and allow your browser to share it. Your coordinates, or map location, go to LA County’s and CalHeatScore’s public map services to find your city, community or ZIP code. They also help sort relief sites by distance. HeatGridLA does not send them anywhere else or save them. They are gone when you close or reload the page.
What is kept on your device
The site uses local storage, a space in your browser that saves data on your device. It does not use cookies. It saves:
- the area you last chose (a ZIP code or city name), so your local emergency numbers are ready next time;
- your language choice (English or Spanish);
- temporary copies of public data (heat scores, fire zones, forecasts and open relief sites), so pages load faster.
Nothing in local storage is sent to HeatGridLA. To remove the saved area, press the × next to it under Emergency contacts. To remove everything, clear this site’s data in your browser settings.
Services your browser contacts
Your browser gets live, official data from these public services. They receive your IP address, which is your device’s internet address, and details about your browser.
- OpenStreetMap — map images (the background map).
- CalEPA CalHeatScore and CAL FIRE (hosted on Esri ArcGIS Online) — today's heat scores by ZIP and the fire hazard zones.
- LA County and City of Los Angeles map services (LA County GIS and ArcGIS Online) — relief sites opened for a current heat event or emergency, and the city or community at a map location.
- National Weather Service (api.weather.gov) — the expected highest air temperature for the area you are looking at.
“Google Maps” buttons open Google Maps, which has its own privacy policy.
Hosting
The site is hosted by Lovable. When a page loads, Lovable receives basic details, such as your IP address and the page you asked for. If a page stops working, its address and a description of the problem may be sent to Lovable. This helps fix the problem.
